V: “Funny, but I’ve heard that same advice from someone.”
B: “Most creative writing classes he said may cause you to sway from your own style.”
V: “I see, thanks for the sound advice Bernice. When did you start writing?”
B: “When I was 10.”
We both started to laugh and we knew why. She was now the interviewer. What’s so much fun about Virginia is that she is so easy to talk to and so genuine. We probably talked for over two hours and it’s wonderful to find someone who has such a tender spirit.
V: “Fells like I’m interviewing you now.” She continued to laugh.
B: “I know!”
V: “You write so well. Once I read some of your work and I tell you I wanted to put my pen down and stop writing. I got a little depressed because you are so good.”
B: “Awe! really? Thank you for your compliments Virginia. I believe the world needs more poets. Everyone is unique but we all carry a message. No one person can exhaust everything there is to talk about.”
V: “You inspired me to write a poem titled “We all have a different flavor” I think it is on my site.”
We talked a little more about poetry, updating websites and book signing and oh, yes, Oprah!
B: “What has been or should I say what is your inspiration for writing?”
V: “My inspiration is everyday life; a song, the news, nothing in particular and everything in particular. I’ll get up in the middle of the night to write something down because I know I will forget if I try to leave it till morning. It was hard at first, but I’ve learned to wake up and just do it, plus I keep a note pad and pen by my bedside. I realized when it comes to me in that way, it must be from above, from my heavenly father. It is in the quiet times when you’re open to receive.”
B: “You are so right my friend.”
V: “And those are usually some of your best work you know. For example I met this woman at the unemployment center where I work. She had literary given up on life. She was 35 and had not just been fired from her job. She had children and life was not easy. I talked to her for a little while before she left. That instance inspired me to write a poem called “A New Start”. I hope she left there with a new point of view on the world after I talked to her.”
B: “I’m sure she did! It is very important how we talk and deal with people. Our words are the most powerful thing we have. They can either build or destroy. Your words of hope can save someone who is on the brink of suicide. My poem “Songbird” in Lemonade Street is all about that.”
The more I talked to Virginia, the more I realized what a rich and interesting life she’s had. I tell you every woman has a story to tell. Every one of us!
B: “Let’s talk about your latest book; FACETS, PHASES & TRANSFORMATION, how did you come up with that title?”... Read On>
